The Urban League of Central Carolinas is a multi-service, non-profit agency with a mission to empower the community to reach financial stability and social justice.
On November 6, 1978, we were incorporated as the 116th affiliate of the National Urban League, the 31st in the south, and the 4th in the Carolinas. In May 1979, ULCC received its charter with a $50,000 annual budget and 150 members. Our headquarters was in an office at the First Union National Bank in uptown Charlotte. In the summer of 1979, the Urban League of Central Carolinas began its first project: filling 100 jobs in major Charlotte businesses, establishing itself as the prime service provider for private sector jobs under the Comprehensive Employment and Training Act (CETA) of 1978. In 1981, United Way recognized ULCC’s purpose and success and ULCC became a United Way member, receiving annual funding from the organization.
